Haiti | Edeyo: Yoga off the Mat

Takeyah In Haiti With StudentMy trip to Haiti has been tremendously amazing. When I wake up each morning to go to the Edeyo Foundation School, I know that I will be greeted by children who appreciate the work that we are doing here. Like with any experience, I have had to go with the flow and it feels good.

Many people know me as a “preparer” (maybe to a fault sometimes). So, while I did some preparing, I didn’t get too much into the details of my grand plans before arriving here. Unexpectedly, I ended up teaching a dance class to a room full of 2nd and 3rd grade students. They wanted to dance (like the older kids), so I helped them get it in. They loved it and were even singing the song and doing the dance the next day. It was truly a blessing to be able to let go and let things flow.

My intention with this trip was to bring the transformative practices of yoga & wellness to the children. I definitely offered those gifts and received transformation. When we think of yoga and wellness, we often mentally go to completing fancy pretzel-like poses, wearing cute yoga pants, drinking superfood smoothies and being able to take a trip away to reset. However, the concepts of unity and healthy mind, body and spirit show up different for each person and situation. I took my transformative practices and embraced their presence in a different way.

Some of these powerful practices have shown up through receiving smiles, holding hands and expressing concern. That has been my yoga and my wellness practice so far. All is well.

Love & Light, Takeyah
